Family and Personal Status Law

Family matters are what occupies Syrians abroad most, because they do not wait: an estate that has never been settled, a marriage that needs registering, maintenance that has stopped, or a divorce held up because one party is outside the country. This department exists for them.

What this department handles

  • Establishing the heirs and their shares, dividing an estate, and the transactions that follow from it.
  • Divorce and separation proceedings and what follows from them.
  • Maintenance, custody and visiting arrangements, and varying them when circumstances change.
  • Registering and documenting marriages, and establishing marriage and parentage.
  • Guardianship of a minor and the administration of a minor's property.

When the heirs live in several countries

Heirs living in different countries does not prevent a matter from proceeding, but it does make arranging the powers of attorney the first step rather than the last. At the first consultation we set out who needs to grant one, which wording is accepted and what authentication each country requires, before anything moves in front of a court.

What helps at the first consultation

The names of everyone involved exactly as they appear on official documents, a copy of the family record, marriage contract or death certificate if you have one, and a short account of what happened and when. Missing documents do not prevent a consultation, but they do set the limits of what can be said with confidence.

How your file is handled while you are abroad

You start by requesting a consultation through the form or on WhatsApp. The legal team reviews your situation and assigns the right specialist. The first consultation is free, and in it we set out what can be done and which documents you will need. Where the matter has to be followed before Syrian courts or authorities, that is done under a power of attorney drawn up and authenticated at the Syrian consulate or embassy in your country of residence, or before a local notary with the required attestations; we tell you the wording you need and the steps that apply where you live. From there everything runs by message, voice call or video call, with no need for you to travel.
